The flu (Influenza) is a virus that affects the lungs, throat, and nose. It spreads easily through droplets when people cough, sneeze, or talk. The droplets can land in the mouths/noses of people nearby. Each year, thousands of children are hospitalized because of the flu.
COVID-19 is caused by a virus, known as SARS-CoV-2, which affects the lungs and breathing. Like the flu, it spreads through droplets when someone who has the virus coughs, sneezes, talks, or even breathes nearby. In 2023 over 916,300 people in the U.S were hospitalized for COVID-19, according to the CDC.
Young children, people over 65, and those with certain health conditions are more likely to get very sick or need hospital care if they catch the flu or COVID-19.
Who Should Get Vaccinated?
The CDC recommends that everyone over 6 months old get a flu shot and the updated COVID-19 vaccine each year, especially during fall and winter. Getting vaccinated lowers the risk of getting sick or needing hospital care from the flu or COVID-19, keeping you and others around you safer.
There’s a common myth that flu and COVID-19 vaccines can cause you to get the flu or COVID-19, but this is not true. These vaccines do not make you sick.
When Should I Get Vaccinated?
It’s best to get vaccinated early in the season, usually starting in September or October. Even if it’s later, it’s still helpful to get vaccinated while viruses are spreading. Vaccines take about 10-14 days to help your body build protection against the virus.
It’s safe to get the flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccines at the same time if you need them.
Where Can I Get These Vaccines?
You can usually get flu and COVID-19 vaccines at doctor’s offices, clinics, pharmacies, urgent care clinics, or health departments. For children vaccines are often given at the doctor’s office or health departments.
