Protecting Your Child from Measles

April 4, 2025

Measles is a very contagious and serious disease. Anyone can get measles, but young children under 5 years old can have the most serious problems.

What are the symptoms of measles?

  • A high fever
  • A runny nose
  • A cough
  • Red, watery eyes

Some children also get a rash. Your health care provider may check your child’s mouth for small white spots called Koplik’s spots.

Measles can sometimes cause swelling around the brain (called encephalitis). This can be very dangerous and even cause long –term brain problems. Children can die from measles.

How is measles treated?

Since measles is a virus, there is no cure. Doctors treat the symptoms of measles with medicine for fever, fluids, and rest. Some children may need extra vitamin A, but this does not cure measles. Ask your health care provider to learn what is best for your child.

How can I protect my child from measles?

The ONLY way to prevent measles is the measles vaccine. It is part of the MMR vaccine, which protects against measles mumps, and rubella.

Children should get:

  • The first dose at 12-15 months old
  • The second dose at 4-6 years old
  • In some cases, babies as young as 6 months may need a dose

The MMR vaccine is very safe and works well to prevent measles. Two doses prevent 97% of measles infections. When most people in a community get vaccinated, it helps protect everyone, including babies and people who cannot get the vaccine for medical reasons this is called herd immunity.

Communities where fewer than 95% of people get the vaccine have a higher risk of a measles outbreak.

Are there side effects from the MMR vaccine?

Most children have no problems after getting the MMR vaccine. If they do, side effects are usually mild, like:

  • Soreness where the shot was given
  • A mild fever
  • A small rash
  • Swelling in the cheeks or neck

What if my child was around someone with measles?

If your child has not had the MMR vaccine or has only had one dose, they could get sick if they were near someone with measles. In some cases, getting the MMR vaccine after being exposed may still help protect them.

If your child is 6 months or older and may have been near someone with measles call your child’s doctor right away. The sooner you call, the better the chance of protecting your child.

Does vitamin A help after exposure to measles?

No, vitamin A does not stop measles after being exposed and cannot replace the vaccine.

Taking too much vitamin A can be harmful. In the U.S., most children already get enough vitamin A in their food. Always check with a doctor or pharmacist before giving your child extra vitamins or supplements.

Is the MMR vaccine safe?

Yes! The MMR vaccine has been used for over 45 years and is very safe. Some children may have mild side effects, like a sore arm or a low fever, but serious reactions are very rare.

There is a lot of information online, and some of it can be scary or overwhelming. If you have concerns about vaccines, we’re here to listen and help. Our team can give you clear, trusted information to help you make the best choice for your child.

Vaccines are the best way to prevent measles and stop outbreaks. Some things you read online or on social media may claim the MMR vaccine has severe side effects, like a link to autism. We know this can make it hard to know what to believe. But many large, well-designed studies have found no link between the MMR vaccine and autism.
